Lake Assal

Lake Assal lies 155 meters below sea level in the Danakil Depression, one of Earth's lowest points. The water is 34.8% salt, nearly 10 times saltier than the ocean. Visitors float effortlessly, similar to the Dead Sea. The mineral-rich water is warm and therapeutic. The surrounding landscape is barren and otherworldly: salt-encrusted rocks and a sense of geological drama. A day trip from Djibouti City is typical; hire a driver or join a tour. The experience is unique and surreal.
