Ghoubbet al-Kharab (The Gate of Hell)

Ghoubbet al-Kharab is a dramatic inlet on Djibouti's eastern coast, surrounded by black volcanic rock. The name, meaning 'Gate of Hell' in Arabic, refers to geothermal activity: hot springs bubble from underwater, creating a surreal landscape. The water near shore is warm. Snorkeling or boat tours reveal the geological features. The setting is remote and untrammeled by tourism; hiring a guide and 4WD vehicle is necessary.
