Visa on arrival available for most nationalities at border posts and airports (USD 30-50 depending on nationality). Can also be obtained from Zimbabwean embassy beforehand. Passport valid for 6 months minimum. Yellow fever vaccination certificate required if arriving from endemic countries. eVisa availability is limited; check current status before travel.

Official currency is Zimbabwean Dollar (ZWL), but USD is preferred and widely accepted in tourism sectors and major establishments. Currency situation is volatile; USD is safest. ATMs in cities accept Visa and Mastercard; exchange rates at banks are better than street dealers. Many businesses quote prices in USD. Carry significant USD cash for transactions.

Providers: Econet Wireless, NetOne, and Telecel. SIM cards available at airport and shops (minimal cost). 4G/LTE in Harare and Victoria Falls; 3G/2G in rural areas. Internet speeds are variable; power outages can disrupt service. Backup offline maps for national parks and remote regions.

Intercity buses connect major towns but are crowded and slow. Domestic flights via Air Zimbabwe or private operators connect Harare, Victoria Falls, and regional destinations. Taxis in cities are available; negotiate fares. Car hire with driver is common for safaris and multi-day trips; organized through lodges. Roads vary; major routes are reasonable; secondary roads need caution.

Malaria is endemic; take prophylaxis, use mosquito nets, and apply insect repellent. Yellow fever vaccination required. Typhoid vaccination recommended. Tap water in major cities is treated; drink bottled water in rural areas. Medical facilities in Harare are reasonable; rural clinics are limited. Travel insurance with evacuation coverage is important.

English is official language; Shona and Ndebele are widely spoken. Learning basic greetings in English and local languages is appreciated. Respect for elders and extended courtesies in interaction is important. Photography requires permission; avoid photographing people without consent. Modest dress is expected, particularly in villages. Tipping is appreciated in tourist venues (10% for good service).

Rainy season: November-March (warm, green, some roads impassable); dry season: April-October. Dry season is optimal for safaris (May-September is coolest). Victoria Falls water flow is maximum during rainy season; during dry season the falls are less dramatic but fully visible. Temperatures vary by altitude; highlands (Chimanimani) are cooler. Best overall window: June-August for comfort and wildlife viewing.

Harare International Airport (HRE) is the primary gateway, served by Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, South African Airways, and regional carriers. Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) serves the northwest. Overland entry from Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, and Mozambique is straightforward; the Zambezi crossings offer scenic border experiences.
