Great Zimbabwe is Africa's most impressive pre-colonial archaeological site. The massive dry-stone construction (mortarless walls reaching 10+ meters) demonstrates sophisticated engineering. The site was the capital of a thriving medieval kingdom (11th-15th centuries) controlling Indian Ocean trade routes. A museum at the site provides context; guides are essential for understanding the complex's history and archaeology. The site is spiritual to Shona people; it represents pre-colonial African achievement and independence.
