Meroe Nubian Pyramids

Ancient Nubian kingdom ruins with 40+ pyramids, temples, and royal necropolises in desert landscape.

Meroe, 200 km north of Khartoum, was the capital of the Kushite kingdom (3rd century BCE to 4th century CE). Over 40 pyramids and temples dot the desert site. Smaller and sharper than Egyptian pyramids but equally impressive in isolation. The landscape is vast and barren, adding to the surreal quality. Access requires arranged tours from Khartoum; security and remoteness make independent travel difficult.
