El-Kurru and Nuri Royal Cemeteries (near Karima)
Earlier Nubian royal burial sites with pyramids and temples predating Meroe, near Jebel Barkal sacred mountain.
Near Karima, 400 km north of Khartoum, El-Kurru and Nuri contain pyramids and temples of earlier Nubian kings. Jebel Barkal, a striking table-topped mountain nearby, held religious significance. The sites are less crowded than Meroe and retain remote atmosphere. Access is by organized tour; security and accessibility vary.
