Timbuktu

Medieval center of Islamic learning, UNESCO World Heritage site. Currently unsafe for visitors due to armed group activity.

Timbuktu was a center of Islamic scholarship and trade from the 12th century onward. The city contains three UNESCO-listed mosques (Djinguereber, Sankore, Sidi Yahya) with intricate mud architecture. The city is famous for its manuscript libraries, some of which have been digitized for preservation. However, the city is currently under the control of armed groups and is explicitly off-limits per Western travel advisories. Historical significance makes it worth knowing about, but visit only when security improves.
