Niger River

West Africa's most important river, flowing through Mali with fishermen, markets, and bird life.

The Niger River flows through Mali from south to north, creating an oasis of life in the semi-arid landscape. Bamako and Segou sit on the river. Boat trips are possible from Bamako (hire through hotels) and offer perspectives on riverside fishing villages and wildlife. Sunset cruises on the river are popular with tourists. The river is integral to Mali's history and daily life.
