Mount Karthala

Active volcano and highest point in Comoros offering challenging hikes and panoramic island views.

Mount Karthala rises 2,361 meters on Grande Comore and is one of the world's most active volcanoes. The summit crater is massive and dramatic. Hikes typically start at night to reach the summit by sunrise; multiday camping options exist. Guides are essential and can be arranged in local villages. The hike is strenuous but rewarding; views from the rim encompass all three islands and the Mozambique Channel.
