An artistic and bohemian island where music (morna, funaná) thrives in street performances, local bars, and studios.
Mindelo is Cabo Verde's cultural capital. Street musicians play morna (melancholic ballads) on corners; funana accordion bands perform in bars and at festivals. The Carnival (February) is legendary across West Africa. Street art covers walls; galleries and studios are open to visitors. The harbor is picturesque; seafood restaurants are excellent and cheap. The pace is relaxed; conversations linger. Many Cape Verdean musicians and artists are based here.
