Sal Island Beaches & Turtle Reserve

Flat, developed island with pristine beaches, water sports, and a sea turtle nesting reserve.

Sal is the tourist hub. Long stretches of white sand, calm turquoise water, and consistent wind attract kitesurfers and windsurfers. The beach at Santa Maria is crowded but clean; Ponta Preta is for surfers. Pedra Lume Salt Crater is a geological oddity where you float in hypersaline water (like the Dead Sea). The Sea Turtle Conservation Center protects nesting hawksbill and loggerhead turtles (visits by appointment). The island is arid but easy to navigate; infrastructure is best here.
