Maio Island & Salt Flats
The quietest and least developed island with pristine beaches, salt ponds, and minimal tourism infrastructure.
Maio is where you escape tourism. The island is nearly flat, arid, and sparsely populated. Salt ponds create geometric patterns in the landscape. Beaches are empty; water is clear. The main town (Porto Ingles) is tiny with a handful of guesthouses. You need time and flexibility to visit (irregular ferry service). The island rewards travelers seeking solitude and genuine encounters with islanders.
