Cidade Velha (Old Town) Fortifications

UNESCO-listed first European settlement in the tropics with historic forts and colonial architecture overlooking the Atlantic.

Cidade Velha is where Portuguese colonization of the tropics began in 1462. The Forte Real de Sao Felipe dominates the waterfront; the Catedral de Santa Maria is a ruin nearby. Cobblestone streets, colonial houses, and the harborscape create a time-locked atmosphere. The site is both beautiful and laden with the history of slavery, colonialism, and resistance. Museums provide context. The town is quiet and worth a full day trip from Praia.
