Porto-Novo Colonial Architecture
Benin's official capital with Portuguese colonial architecture and the Royal Palace Museum.
Porto-Novo (not Cotonou, the economic capital) is architecturally distinct: pastel colonial buildings, narrow streets, and the Royal Palace of Porto-Novo (now a museum). The mosque and cathedral stand near each other, reflecting the town's multi-faith heritage. Museums explain the evolution from slave trading port to colonial capital. The pace is slower than Cotonou; locals are welcoming. The town is underexplored by tourists and rewards a day trip.
