Natitingou & Tata Somba Villages
Northern Benin's gateway to a UNESCO region of 110+ traditional Somba fortified houses with distinctive architecture.
The Tata Somba are multi-story clay and thatch structures designed for defense and communal living; each house is a fortress. Built to withstand slave raids, they reflect Somba engineering and social organization. The region (Atakora plateau) is cooler than the south with dramatic scenery. Natitingou town is a market hub; surrounding villages welcome visitors into homes. Currently, northern travel is restricted due to security; consult latest advisories before planning.
