Ganvie Lake Village

Ganvie is a living model of adaptation and cultural continuity. Houses, schools, markets, and temples sit on wooden platforms above water; transport is by wooden canoe or motor boat. The settlement was founded by Tofinu people who fled slave raids by building their homes over water where slavers could not follow. Today, traditional fishing coexists with tourism; children paddle to school in pirogues. Tours involve boat rides through the village, visits to homes, and meals at floating restaurants. The experience is immersive but crowded with tourists.
