Abomey Royal Palaces

The palace complex is a sprawling museum of mud architecture, carved doors, and royal regalia. Twelve kings built interconnected palaces here; the grounds contain courtyards, shrines, and galleries of thrones, weapons, and ritual masks. The museum explains the Kingdom's military structure, including the famous Amazon warrior corps. Guides (often descendants of royal families) narrate with authority. Walking these grounds, you grasp the sophistication and scale of pre-colonial West African kingdoms.
