Fortress of Sao Miguel

16th-century Portuguese fortress overlooking the capital, now a museum with colonial artifacts.

Standing on a rocky promontory above Luanda's harbor, this fortress marks the founding of the city in 1576. Whitewashed walls, cannon emplacements, and a small museum detail Portuguese colonial history and slavery's role in Angola's past. Views across the bay are stunning at sunset. Entry is affordable; guides are available but speak limited English.
