A short history

Zambia's name comes from the Zambezi River, a liquid spine running through the nation. Bantu peoples migrated here centuries ago; kingdoms rose and fell; trade networks connected the interior to the coast. British colonizers carved out 'Northern Rhodesia' and extracted copper from the earth in quantities that made the colony wealthy by African standards. But that wealth enriched colonizers, not Zambians. Independence in 1964 under Kenneth Kaunda promised liberation; Kaunda was visionary but his one-party state couldn't sustain prosperity as copper prices fell. Later leaders privatized the industry and opened the economy. Zambia never collapsed like some neighbors; it remained relatively stable even as its economy stagnated. Recent years have brought both Chinese investment and debt; the nation navigates between optimism and caution.

Bemba

Northern and northeastern Zambia (Copperbelt, Northern Province)

Agricultural heritage with farming of maize, cassava, and beans. Matrilineal kinship system (inheritance and succession through mother's line). Elaborate ceremonies for life transitions (initiation, marriage, funeral rites). Strong community leadership structures (chiefs and village councils). Skilled in craft production and metalwork.
