Bunce Island (Slave Castle)

Ruined fortress and slave trading post visible from Freetown, now a museum and memorial.

Bunce Island, 30 km offshore from Freetown, was a British slave trading post from the 1670s. The ruins of the fortress remain; guides share the history. Boat tours from Freetown depart regularly. The site is sobering and historically important. A half-day trip.
