Protected forest in Virunga Mountains home to endangered mountain gorillas and accessible via guided treks from nearby towns.
This 160 sq km park is Africa's premier mountain gorilla habitat. Guided treks (4-6 hours, strenuous) ascend misty forest trails to find habituated gorilla families. The experience is profound and cannot be overstated. Park fees are high (USD 1,500 per permit) but justified. The nearby town of Musanze serves as base; hotels range from budget to luxury.
