Medina of Fez

UNESCO medieval walled city, one of the world's largest medinas, with maze-like streets and historic tanneries.

Fez el-Bali (Old Fez) is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities, founded in the 9th century. The medina is a labyrinth of narrow streets, riads, mosques, and souks. The leather tanneries (visible from viewing terraces) are iconic, with vats of dye creating a surreal landscape. The Al-Karaouine Mosque and University are among the oldest in the world. A guide is essential; getting lost is easy but part of the experience. The city retains authentic medieval character.
