Ait Benhaddou Kasbah
UNESCO clay fortress village on the Dades River; backdrop for countless films, stunning architecture.
Ait Benhaddou, en route between Marrakech and the Sahara, is a historic kasbah (clay fortress) village on the Dades River. Adobe structures layer up hillsides; narrow streets wind between buildings. It was a caravan trading post and is now a film set (Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, etc.). Visitors can explore houses and climb to the kasbah for views. Sunset is atmospheric. The village is authentic but tourist-aware; several guesthouses allow overnight stays.
