Visa & entry
Most nationalities require a visa. Apply at a Liberian embassy; visa on arrival is not reliably available. Processing takes 5-10 working days. Passport must be valid for 6 months beyond stay. Yellow fever vaccination is strongly recommended and proof is often requested.
Money & payments
The Liberian Dollar (LRD) is official, though USD is widely used. ATMs in Monrovia accept major cards but are unreliable elsewhere. Bring USD in cash as primary backup. Exchange rates at banks are better than street changers. Credit cards are rarely accepted.
SIM cards & internet
SIM cards from Lonestar, Orange Liberia, and Zain are available at the airport and shops. 4G coverage in Monrovia only; 2G elsewhere. Internet speeds are slow and unpredictable. Download maps and content before travel. Mobile money (Orange Money, MTN) is expanding but cash is still standard.
Getting around
Monrovia taxis are plentiful but negotiate fares. Shared minibuses connect interior towns on rough roads (journey times are unpredictable). Motorcycle taxis (okadas) are cheap and common but dangerous. Hire a 4x4 with driver for interior travel. Roberts International Airport (ROB) is 50 km from Monrovia.
Health
Yellow fever, malaria, dengue, Ebola awareness, and typhoid are present. Vaccinate before arrival (yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis A, hepatitis B). Begin malaria prophylaxis. Tap water is not safe; drink bottled water. Medical care is basic; serious illness requires evacuation.
Language & etiquette
English is official. Liberian English creole is spoken in cities; interior languages (Mende, Bassa, Kpelle) in rural areas. Learn basic English greetings (Liberians appreciate effort). Handshakes are firm and common. Always greet before business. Respect for elders is paramount.
When to go
Dry season (November-April) is best; roads are more passable and humidity is lower. Rainy season (May-October) brings afternoon downpours, high humidity, and road closures. December-February is coolest. Avoid September when coastal areas flood.
Getting there
Roberts International Airport (ROB) near Monrovia is the primary gateway, served by Brussels Airlines, Air Senegal, and Royal Air Maroc. Coastal routes from Freetown connect via potholed highways and shipping connections. Regional ferries link to Guinea and Sierra Leone, though schedules are unpredictable.
