Providencia Island

Historic island offshore from Monrovia, site of the original 1822 settlement.

Providence Island is where the American Colonization Society first settled freed slaves in 1822. The island is now a memorial and historical site, accessible by boat from Monrovia. Ruins of colonial buildings and fortifications remain. The site is sobering and significant, offering perspective on Liberia's unique founding. Tours are available through hotels in Monrovia.
