Sehlabathebe National Park

Sehlabathebe National Park is Lesotho's only national park, spanning 6,500 hectares of alpine plateau and escarpment at 2,000m+ elevation. It is one of Southern Africa's most remote and least-touristed parks. Landscape is stark and beautiful: windswept grasslands, dramatic cliff faces, waterfall gorges. Walking and pony trekking trails penetrate into wilderness. Rock art sites (San heritage) are scattered through the park. Wildlife is limited (birds, small antelope, eland) due to altitude and human use. Accommodation is a basic lodge (50-100 LSL/night) or camping. Access is via Qacha's Nek town (4+ hours drive from Maseru on rough roads). Roads may be impassable in winter. The park requires extreme self-sufficiency and adventure mindset. Most visitors hire pony guides and camps; expect rustic conditions. Budget 3-5 days minimum for meaningful exploration. Best season: September-May (mild to cool, dry).
