Sani Pass & Highest Border
Highest mountain pass in South Africa (2,876m), hairpin switchback road, views over Drakensberg, 4x4 access, border crossing gateway.
Sani Pass is a steep mountain pass (2,876m) linking South Africa and Lesotho via a bone-jarring 4x4-only road. The pass ascends 1,000m in 13 km with hairpin switchbacks; the drive is thrilling and scenic. Views from the top sweep across the Drakensberg escarpment. The pass is a primary entry point into Lesotho for adventure travelers. A 4x4 rental is essential; regular cars cannot make the ascent. The pass can be closed in winter (snow/ice). Border formalities are handled at Sani Pass Gate (Lesotho side). Day visits from South Africa are common (4-5 hour round trip from Underberg). Accommodation on Lesotho side is basic (thatched rondavels) or camping. The pass is iconic for its remoteness, views, and difficulty; crossing it feels like achieving something.
