Maluti Mountains & Alpine Plateau

The Maluti Mountains form the spine of Lesotho and are shared with South Africa's Drakensberg range. They are Africa's highest mountains south of Tanzania. Peaks exceed 3,400m. Multi-day trekking routes cross the mountains using traditional passes. Access is via pony trekking from villages or via organized expeditions. Routes vary in difficulty and length (5-14 days). Communities at base (Sani Pass area, Malealea, Qacha's Nek) support trekkers with guides and ponies. Alpine conditions are severe: altitude sickness is common, weather changes rapidly, snow can appear in winter. Best trekkers approach via specialist outfitters (Africa Eco Adventures, Busha Adventures) offering all-inclusive packages. Budget is USD 1,500-3,000+ for 7-10 day expedition. Best season: September-May (though September-October is coolest and driest).
