Malealea Village & Pony Trekking
Traditional mountain village, pony trekking hub, horseback explorations, villager homestays, waterfall visits, cultural immersion.
Malealea is a small village in the central highlands (1,500m elevation) and the primary hub for pony trekking in Lesotho. Horses are integral to mountain life; trekking follows traditional transportation routes. Day rides and multi-day camping treks range from easy to challenging. Routes visit waterfalls (Bushman's Falls), traditional villages, and remote mountain passes. Guides are skilled and warm; pony care is excellent. Accommodation ranges from basic lodge (60-150 LSL/night) to village homestay ($15-25/night) to camping. Malealea Lodge is the main operator; book via website or through Maseru. A 2-3 hour drive from Maseru (rough mountain road) makes it accessible for long weekends. Pony trekking is the most authentic way to experience Lesotho mountains; you travel as Sotho people have for centuries. Best season: September-May (mild weather, dry trails).
