Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches
UNESCO World Heritage site with 11 unique churches carved from single rock blocks, arranged as a spiritual pilgrimage landscape.
Lalibela is Ethiopia's holiest pilgrimage site. Eleven churches are carved directly from volcanic rock into an intricate ground-level complex. The construction, likely 12th-13th century, reflects a plan to recreate Jerusalem. Pilgrims from across Ethiopia gather year-round; Christian festivals (Timkat, Easter) see massive crowds. The churches are still active sites of worship. Photography inside churches requires permission. The experience is deeply spiritual and architecturally remarkable.
