Gondar Royal Castles

Gondar was the capital under emperors Fasilides and Iyasu. A walled compound contains several castles, churches, and ceremonial buildings in a unique architectural style blending Ethiopian, Hindu, and European influences. The castles were partially destroyed during Italian occupation but have been restored. The Fasilides Bath, filled annually for Timkat (Epiphany) celebrations, is an impressive pool structure.
