Gondar Royal Castles
Fortified royal compound with multiple castles and churches from the 17th-18th century Gondarine period.
Gondar was the capital under emperors Fasilides and Iyasu. A walled compound contains several castles, churches, and ceremonial buildings in a unique architectural style blending Ethiopian, Hindu, and European influences. The castles were partially destroyed during Italian occupation but have been restored. The Fasilides Bath, filled annually for Timkat (Epiphany) celebrations, is an impressive pool structure. The site is one of Ethiopia's most visited; guides provide essential historical context.
