Danakil Depression

One of Earth's most extreme environments with active volcanoes, salt lakes, and surreal geothermal features.

The Danakil Depression in the Afar region is one of the world's hottest and lowest places outside the Dead Sea. Erta Ale volcano has a persistent lava lake. The Dallol geothermal area features multicolored hot springs and acid pools. Salt mining traditions continue as they have for centuries. Multi-day expeditions from Mekelle or Addis Ababa are necessary; licensed guides and 4WD vehicles are mandatory. The experience is extreme, surreal, and unforgettable. Heat exposure is a serious risk; careful preparation is essential.
