Axum Archaeological Site
Ancient capital of the Axumite Empire with towering stelae, churches, and tombs from Ethiopia's first kingdom.
Axum was the center of an ancient empire that rivaled Rome and Persia. Granite stelae (pillars) up to 33 meters tall mark royal tombs. The Church of Saint Mary of Zion houses the Ark of the Covenant according to Ethiopian tradition. Museums display artifacts from the Axumite period. The site spans a large area; guides are beneficial. Axum feels remote and historically resonant. The city itself has a relaxed atmosphere with colonial-era buildings.
