Siwa Oasis
Remote desert oasis 300 km from nearest city, with salt lakes, Berber culture, and Alexander the Great's temple.
Siwa is an isolated oasis in the western desert inhabited by Berber-descended Siwans with distinct language and customs. The town center has a ruined medieval kasbah and the Temple of Amun where Alexander the Great consulted the oracle. Salt lakes surround the oasis; fresh water springs allow bathing. The landscape is surreal: dunes and salt formations. Access is by rough road (6-7 hours from Marsa Matruh) or air. Limited facilities; self-sufficiency essential. Very rewarding for adventurous travelers.
