Luxor Temple and Karnak Complex

Massive pharaonic temples in Upper Egypt with towering pylons, colossal statues, and sanctuaries spanning centuries.

Luxor (ancient Thebes) contains two major temple complexes. Luxor Temple sits on the Nile's east bank, smaller and more intimate, with a towering pylon entrance and statue-lined courtyards. Karnak, a few km north, is vast, a sprawl of sanctuaries, pylons, and sacred lakes built and modified by dozens of pharaohs. Hieroglyphic inscriptions cover walls. The sound-and-light evening show at Karnak is memorable. Best visited December-February. Felucca rides on the Nile are included in most trips.
