Ramesses II's cliff-hewn temples relocated to save from Lake Nasser; colossal statues face the Nile.
In far southern Egypt near Sudan, Abu Simbel showcases two temples carved from solid rock by Ramesses II. The Great Temple is fronted by four 67-meter colossal statues. The twin temple of Nefertari is beside it. Both were relocated 64 meters uphill in the 1960s to escape Lake Nasser's rising water. Accessible by air (daily flights from Aswan) or long 4WD drive. The site is remote but unforgettable. Entry is controlled; tours operate on strict schedules.
