The Foumban Royal Palace combines local traditional Bamoun architecture with German colonial influences, and has been the seat of the Kingdom since 1394 - now into its 20th hereditary sultan. Sultan Njoya is unique in African history for having invented his own 85-character script to record Bamoun law and history. The adjoining museum holds thrones, feathered cloaks, ceremonial drums, and the original script tablets. A licensed palace guide provides access to areas beyond the public section.
