Medina of Tunis
UNESCO medieval walled city with Ottoman architecture, souks, and the famous Al-Zitouna Mosque.
The medina of Tunis is a dense, walkable maze of narrow streets, riads, mosques, and souks selling carpets, spices, leather, and textiles. The Al-Zitouna (Olive) Mosque is the largest and dates to 732 CE. The medina is less overwhelming than Fez but retains authentic character. The Bardo Museum (just outside) houses Tunisian mosaics and Roman artifacts. A guide helps navigate; wandering is also rewarding.
