Kairouan Sacred City

Tunisia's holiest city, founded 670 CE, with the Great Mosque of Uqba and medina pilgrimage destination.

Kairouan, in central Tunisia, is one of Islam's four holiest cities (along with Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem). The Great Mosque of Uqba, founded 670 CE, is stunning with its vast courtyard and minaret visible for kilometers. The medina is compact and authentic. The nearby Zaouia of Sidi Sahib (tomb shrine) and cisterns add layers. A pilgrimage destination rather than tourist site; visitors are respectfully welcomed but this is active religious space.
