Lake Tanganyika and Mahale Mountains
Africa's deepest lake with montane forest and endemic chimpanzee populations; remote and pristine.
Lake Tanganyika stretches for 670 km between Tanzania and Democratic Republic of Congo. Mahale Mountains National Park on the Tanzanian shore protects one of Africa's largest wild chimpanzee populations. The combination of deep freshwater lake, dramatic mountain terrain, and primate research offers unique immersion. Chimpanzee trekking is challenging but rewarding; the lake supports fisheries and trade traditions. Accommodation is limited and expensive; this remains one of Tanzania's least-visited but most rewarding destinations for those seeking solitude and wildlife.
