Cape Winelands

Wine production region 45 km east of Cape Town; 300+ estates, cellar door tastings, Mediterranean vineyard landscapes.

Three villages anchor the winelands: Stellenbosch (university town, historic architecture), Paarl (larger, more commercial), and Franschhoek (epicenter, galleries, restaurants). Wine estates range from industrial (Distillers, Backsberg: drop-in friendly) to boutique (Rickety Bridge, Grande Provence: appointment-only, intimate). Tastings cost 50-150 ZAR per venue; most waive fees if you buy. Best wines are Pinotage (South African signature), Cabernet, and Sauvignon Blanc. Expect to visit 3-5 estates per day max. Mid-range restaurants in Franschhoek rival those in Paris; budget accordingly. Accommodation ranges from farmstays (400-800 ZAR/night) to luxury five-stars (2,000+ ZAR). Peak season is December-January and Easter; plan ahead or risk fully booked villages.
