Saint-Louis

Colonial river town with Caribbean-colored buildings and Senegal River delta birdwatching.

Saint-Louis was Senegal's first colonial capital and retains charming colonial architecture on Ile de Saint-Louis. The town sits on the Senegal River, and the delta is prime for birdwatching. Hotels are small and characterful. The nearby Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary hosts millions of migratory birds (November-May). 4-5 hours drive north of Dakar.
