Lake Retba (Lac Rose)
Shocking pink saltwater lake, reputedly caused by algae and salt content.
Lake Retba, 30 km from Dakar, is a surreal landscape of pink water used as a backdrop for countless photographs. The pink hue is controversial in cause (algae vs. salt minerals); seasonal color varies. Salt harvesting has occurred historically. A half-day trip from Dakar; boats and camel rides are offered. Expect tourist crowds and vendors.
