Historic island with colonial buildings, slave trade museum, and cultural heritage site.
Goree Island, a UNESCO site 10 minutes by ferry from Dakar, is a haunting memorial to the Atlantic slave trade. Colonial buildings in pastel colors line cobbled streets. The House of Slaves is a sobering museum. The island is car-free, peaceful, and filled with galleries, restaurants, and studios. Many visitors spend an afternoon here; some overnight.
