Sossusvlei

Iconic red sand dunes up to 325m tall, salt pan, sculpted desert landscape; hot-air balloon rides, sunrise photography.

Sossusvlei is a vast salt and clay pan surrounded by the highest dunes in Namibia, some reaching 325m (Big Daddy dune is the tallest climbable). The ochre-red sand contrasts sharply with white salt patches and creates otherworldly light at sunrise and sunset. Most visitors arrive pre-dawn (3-4 am from Sesriem lodge) to watch the sun paint the dunes gold and purple. Climbing Big Daddy takes 1-2 hours; Dune 45 (popular, moderate) is 45 minutes; Dune Star (longer, fewer crowds) offers solitude. Dead Vlei is a white-salt pan ringed by 900-year-old blackened camel thorn trees, surreal and haunting. Hot-air balloon flights (2,000+ NAD) offer unmatched aerial perspectives. Park entry is 80 NAD. Allow minimum 2-3 days to appreciate varied perspectives and light conditions. Self-drive (2WD) is standard from Sesriem village (65 km).
