Damaraland (Twyfelfontein)

Damaraland is a rugged plateau of rust-colored mountains and vast space. Twyfelfontein (dubious fountain) is a UNESCO site with 2,000+ ancient rock engravings and paintings spanning 2,000 years, created by San hunter-gatherers. Guided walks are mandatory (50-80 NAD) and interpret the art. Petrified Forest (Aba Huab river gorge) contains 260-million-year-old fossilized trees. Burnt Mountain's volcanic slopes glow reddish in afternoon light. Brandberg (Namibia's highest peak, 2,573m) is a day hike from base camp (guides required). Damaraland Lodge and communal conservancy camps (400-1,500 NAD/night) support local Herero and Damara communities. Wildlife includes desert elephant, lion, oryx, and giraffe. Driving is rocky and slow; a full day's drive from Windhoek is required. Budget 2-3 days to see main attractions. Access is mostly off-road; 4x4 or high-clearance vehicles recommended but 2WD is possible on main routes in dry season.
