Chinguetti

Medieval Islamic trading town in the Sahara, ancient manuscripts and blue-roofed buildings.

Chinguetti is a remote desert town with Moorish architecture, narrow streets, and a famous library of Islamic manuscripts. The town dates back centuries and is a trading and pilgrimage center. The library preserves rare Qurans and religious texts. The town feels like a step back in time. Access is via organized desert tour from Nouakchott (full day drive), best in dry season.
