Elmina Castle (Fort of Sao Jorge da Mina)
West Africa's oldest European building (1482) and a major slave trading fort with more preserved architecture than Cape Coast.
Elmina Castle is the oldest European structure south of the Sahara. Built by the Portuguese, it is simultaneously an architectural landmark and a site of profound historical trauma. The castle includes dungeons, governor's quarters, chapel, and administrative areas. The town of Elmina surrounds the castle; fishing boats operate from the beach adjacent to the fort. The contrast between architectural beauty and historical horror is stark and instructive. The castle is larger and more sprawling than Cape Coast, with more preserved infrastructure.
