Cape Coast Castle
A UNESCO World Heritage site and former slave fort where millions of enslaved Africans were held before transatlantic shipment.
Cape Coast Castle is a significant historical site. Built in the 17th century, it served as a trading fort and later a slave dungeon. The castle's dungeons, where enslaved people were held in darkness, are somber and emotionally powerful. The castle also held governors' quarters and administrative offices. The site now functions as a museum and memorial. Walking through the castle, especially the dungeons and the 'Door of No Return,' is an intense historical experience that contextualizes the transatlantic slave trade.
