Kunta Kinteh Island (Juffureh) & Slave Forts
Historic island in the Gambia River where enslaved Africans were held before shipment across the Atlantic.
Kunta Kinteh Island (formerly James Island) holds the ruins of a European fort used in the slave trade. The island is small and accessible by boat from Banjul. The Juffureh Museum documents the transatlantic slave trade and oral histories of the Kinte family (made famous by Alex Haley's 'Roots'). The experience is emotionally heavy but historically important. It is part of the larger narrative of resistance and survival.
